School Philosophy

Ascension Lutheran School was established in 1963 by Ascension Lutheran Church to serve the congregation and as an outreach to the community.  The educational and co-curricular programs strive to foster intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical and social development.

Recognizing that education is a life long process of formal and informal experiences with the home, school and church, Ascension seeks to collaborate with parents to fully develop each child's potential in a loving, nurturing environment.  We believe maximum learning occurs when home and school work together to mutually support and reinforce Christian values.

A key to quality education is a well-qualified, dynamic staff.  Teachers at Ascension Lutheran School maintain appropriate credentials and certification in their teaching field, and evidence a lifestyle that reflects a dynamic, growing relationship with Christ.  The staff of Ascension School lead their classes in a spirit of love and discipline, while setting a strong Christian example.

Curriculum

The curriculum in all grades is designed to develop a level of competency in the basic skills equal to each individual student's ability.  Our quality academic program offers courses in mathematics, science, English, history and religion.  In addition, the computer technology curriculum in grades 1-8 provides enrichment as well as remediation through the use of educational software.  Instruction in musical theory and performance is offered to all grades weekly.  Weekly enrichment sessions in Spanish with an emphasis on pronunciation and vocabulary development is provided for grades   1-6.  Students in the 7th and 8th grade classes have a daily, high-school level Spanish 1 course as an elective part of their course of study. Our gymnasium and multipurpose facility make a complete athletic program possible in all grades.  Physical education is a required activity for all students.

Students in our middle school (grades 5 through 8) are taught in a departmentalized setting, where teachers share instructional responsibilities in their respective fields of expertise.  A challenging curriculum is offered, including the opportunity to take college preparatory or honors level mathematics, English, history, science, religion, music, art studio, study skills, physical education, Spanish and health.  Please see our separate information sheet on our middle school program for more complete information.

Student Wardrobe Policy

Ascension Lutheran School has established a dress code and wardrobe policy to assist in meeting the overall academic and behavioral goals of this school.  These goals include providing a quality academic education for students while developing self-esteem and respect for others.  We believe coming dressed for work at school increases academic achievement, appropriate behavior, and a sense of community.  Students in grades kindergarten through eighth must wear uniform clothing purchased from the Dennis Uniform Company.  A variety of styles and colors is available.
